There is a great quote about Alan Touring that I love "Alan was slow to learn that indistinct line that separated initiative from disobedience". I have often described my own and my daughters behaviors as having a "healthy disrespect for authority" - thank you for showing up to help others be brave. The world needs more of that.
I've used the same terminology of NPC vs MC to describe how I feel to my friends and colleagues, but I don't think they truly understood what it meant. Reading this, it warms me to see that I am not alone in feeling this way. I was laid off in Aug '23 and struggled to find my next job. The abundance of time gave me a lot of anxiety but also an opportunity to be introspective and realize that I want to take control of my own story and be a founder. I've been afraid to take the first step because the risks seem overwhelming and paralyzing. This essay energized me and gave me the push that I needed to dive into entrepreneurship and break out of my life as an NPC. Thank you, Dave, for sharing such valuable insights and validating my experience and my path forward!
